A tree by the street next to our townhouse complex in Jacksonville, Oregon
Making my quickly on foot toward a project that happily involved my camera, and just as I was crossing the street by our home, I heard the unmistakably loud sound of a pileated woodpecker drilling on a nearby tree. I looked up and there he was. This not being a robin or a flicker, but rather a typically illusive species, I quickly dropped my camera bag, pulled out the camera and attached the telephoto lens, and fortunately this fellow waited for me and didn't seem to be the least camera shy, allowing me to snap off several shots before he swooped right past my head as his parting gesture.
