Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center, Cameroon
Baby Carla arrived to the Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center in August 2012. A victim of the illegal bushmeat trade in Cameroon, her mother was killed and she was taken from the forest to sell as a pet. Luckily, someone did the right thing and brought her to the center. Heartbreakingly, she slowly started to come out of her shell and eat. Before long, with the love and comfort of her caregivers, she was strong and confident enough to start climbing trees where her goofy personality shined. To me, capturing this moment represents her future in a safe environment thanks to the Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center.
