Cape Cross, Namibia
This Cape Fur Seal, just one or two months old, lies bedraggled on the beach after what was probably its first foray into the brisk surf and strong currents offshore. After a while, he recovered and padded off in search of his mother. Infant mortality is high in the first months, mainly from excessive heat, low body weight, and predation by hyenas and jackals.
