Año Nuevo State Reserve, California
After taking the guided tour of the main elephant seal colony at Año Nuevo State Reserve, I always enjoy taking a walk along "Loser's Beach" for sunset. The sandstone cliffs of the San Mateo Coastline light up as the sun drops towards the horizon, and a few non-dominant bulls can usually be found there. If you're lucky, every now and then they'll rear up and make their characteristic gurgling sound to make sure that the other bulls know they are still there.
