Big Bar Lake, British Columbia
We had just finished setting up camp at Big Bar Lake when we heard a loon start calling at sunset. We launched our canoe and paddled out to the general area where the loon was fishing; and to avoid chasing him, we drifted slowly and randomly around, hoping he would get used to our presence and approach closer. Just as the light was fading, he surfaced only a few yards from our canoe, and with water still dripping from his dive, began to send his haunting calls echoing from shore to shore.
