Bay Trail, Mountain View, CA
My wife and I were walking along the Bay Trail through the Mountain View section of the Don Edwards Wildlife Refuge and noticed a great blue heron acting unusually. When we aimed our cameras and magnified, we could tell the heron wrangling a snake, which turned out to be a yellow-bellied water snake. Eventually, the heron took wing with the still-living snake in beak, so we missed the decisive moments where the heron came out victorious. However, we eventually caught up with the bird, sitting between taxiways of Moffett Federal Air Field, the snake limp in its beak.
Cropped, toned, enlarged.
