Big Bar Lake, British Columbia
We had just set up our tent before sunset at Big Bar Lake, BC, when we heard a loon calling. Launching our canoe, we paddled out to the general area where the loon was fishing; and to avoid chasing him, we drifted slowly and randomly, hoping he would get used to our presence and approach us. Just as the light was fading, he surfaced from a dive just a few yards away, and still dripping water from his dive, he let forth a series of cries that echoed hauntingly from one end of the lake to the other.
