Mt. Kyaiktiyo, southeastern Myanmar
On top of Mt. Kyaiktiyo in southeastern Myanmar, shrouded in clouds of mist and devotion, rests Kyaiktiyo Pagoda, the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage site in Myanmar. The pagoda, just 24 ft high, sits on top of Golden Rock, a gigantic, gilded boulder that defies the laws of physics as it rests precariously on the edge of a cliff. I completed the 7-mile pilgrimage from Kinpun base camp to Golden Rock with much anticipation. As I watched the sun dip below the horizon, the minimalistic beauty of Golden Rock became readily apparent, serving as a spiritual beacon to the darkened valley below.
