Haida Gwai (Queen Charlotte Islands), British Columbia
"In the beginning of Time, when the Ravens were white..." began the creation stories of some Northwest coast First Nations peoples; and when this white raven appeared in Haida Gwai, homeland of the Haida people, it gave rise to a level of excitement like the appearance of a white buffalo among the people of the Great Plains. Like the art of the Northwest First Nations, the white raven lived in a world of red, white, and blue light and black shadows, familiar to anyone who has spent time in the northwest environment.
