Mauna Kea Game Management Area, Hawai'i
The critically endangered Palila (Loxioides bailleui) relies on the seed pods of the Mamane tree (shown here) for survival and is limited to a small range on the big island of Hawai'i. Prolonged drought and introduced species have caused massive population declines for this amazing bird, and its population now numbers less than 1000 individuals.
