I have looked for great gray owls in the wild for many years with no success. This past winter I traveled to Alberta to photograph owls of the north, including the great gray. I was on my last day in the area when, out of the corner of my eye, I caught sight of this owl sitting in a tree near the road watching something intently on the ground. As the car stopped, he flew in with determination and then took off. The experience was over in minutes and it is still the only sighting I have ever had of the beautiful great gray owl.
