Green Moray Eel
Photographer: Jeffrey Haines
Location: Riviera Beach Florida
Many photos of moray eels show them with gaping mouths, showing an impressive and dangerous looking set of teeth. This is misleading, making it appear as though the eel was threatening to bite. In reality, moray eels open and close their mouths to breath as this is the only way they can move water over their gills. I chose to photograph this eel with its mouth closed to show its true nature as a shy but curious creature harmless to divers if unmolested.
