Carolina Wolf Spider (Hogna carolinensis)
Photographer: JOHN SERRAO
Location: DeLand, FL
Story:
I lifted a board at the edge of a scrub woodland near my home in central Florida and came “face to face” with this huge female Carolina wolf spider – the largest species of wolf spider in the U.S. This species often lives in burrows that it digs into the ground, but many (like this one) simply hide beneath cover-objects until night when they emerge to hunt prey , using their excellent vision.
