A Mother Moose and Calf
Photographer: Chase Dekker
Location: Kananaskis Country
A mother moose leads her calf into the tree-line in the high Canadian Rockies. They were in this meadow at the break of dawn feeding in a mud flat that is full of minerals and vitamins that moose crave. During the day, moose take shelter in the forests or ponds to avoid the extreme heat. Moose are very sensitive to hot temperatures and begin to sweat when the temperature exceeds 40ºF. With rising temperatures, moose are having a harder time finding places to keep cool. Their southern range may soon be extending further north and if this trend continues, moose in the lower 48 and southern Canada might be a thing of the past.
