Allen's Hummingbird
Photographer: Mitch Walters
Location: Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve, CA
Story:
The Sepulveda Basin is one of my favorite places to watch and photograph Allen's Hummingbirds. During the breeding season, males stake out a set of perches to eagerly await a passing female's arrival and battle rival males that stray too close to their territory. After watching this particular male for about 10 minutes, I figured out where his favorite perches were. Once I decide on which perch had the best morning light, I simply sat with my camera and waited for the male to arrive. Within minutes, the bright little red and green gem perched himself on a stem within 3 feet of me. It was simply my favorite encounter I ever had with this California native.
