Golden Lion Tamarin
Photographer: Bart van Dorp
Location: Reserve Poço das Antes, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Story:
The history of the Golden lion tamarin is a success story since she was almost extinct in the wild. The Golden lion tamarin is endemic for Rio de Janeiro state. Like many other Brazilian animals illegal pet trade and reducing habitats almost finished their existence in the wild with less then 200 monkeys in 1970. Thanks to a lot of effort from the Association Mico-leão-dourado together with zoos from all over the world using reintroducing programs now their numbers have increased to about 1700. I was very honored to be allowed to enter the reserve to photograph these wonderful monkeys.
