Ice Yachting on Frozen Hudson River
Photographer: Sudhir Sharma
Location: Barrytown, NY
This year's extreme cold weather in New York state resulted in river freezing in northern areas near Rhinecliff-Kingston. Except for the shipping channel that was kept open by Coast Guard, most of the river in this area was frozen solid and it provided an opportunity for the first time in last twelve years for these heavy ice boats or ice yachts to ski or sail on the frozen bed. Some of these ice boats are almost 100 years old and weigh about 2000 pounds and the river ice thickness has to be enough to support this weight. This is a photo of ice boat Cold Wave on frozen Hudson river preparing to sail.
