Pelican Point on Dauphin Island, AL
Just minutes before the sun peeked over the clouds that were hugging the distant horizon, this breeding adult Great Blue Heron landed on the beach, showing his signature head plumes & rufous thighs. He too, was facing the sun, waiting for it to rise above the clouds like the rest of us. His head tassels fluttered in the wind like the marsh grasses beside him. This photo was taken on Pelican Point on Dauphin Island, which is the beach area on the eastern end of this 14-mile-long barrier island.
