Blue Heron Eating a Fish
Photographer: David Bohne
Location: Bonita Springs Beach, Florida
Story:
We observed this blue heron capture this fish, disable/kill the fish, and struggle for a long period to position it to eat. While it was positioning the fish, a golden eagle came diving toward the heron in an attempt to grab the fish away. The heron saw the eagle at the last moment and swung its neck and the fish out of the eagle's grasp. The eagle screeched a loud sound and flew off. The heron continued for several minutes to position the fish so it could swallow it head first, which it eventually did. It took several minutes before the fish went down the heron's neck. The heron stood around for several minutes seemingly unable to fly away because of the huge bulge in its neck.
