Red Morph, Eastern Screech Owl
Photographer: Graham McGeorge
Location: Okefenokee Swamp, Georgia, USA
Portrait of a Red Morph, Eastern Screech Owl. If a mysterious trill catches your attention in the night, bear in mind the spooky sound may come from an owl no bigger than a pint glass. Eastern Screech Owls are strictly nocturnal, roosting during the day in cavities or next to tree trunks. Usually they fit only in the holes excavated by Northern Flickers or Pileated Woodpeckers, as apparently the mid-sized Red-bellied Woodpecker make holes that are not large enough to accommodate them.
