Location: Salton Sea State Park, California
A pelican takes flight from shimmering sunset waters. At Salton Sea, this estuary was once deemed a man-made disaster caused by floods from a broken dike. Now it has become a preserve that sustains 30% of the world's population of the American White Pelican, and provides a sanctuary to many other migratory birds. It is one of the lowest spots on Earth at -275 feet below sea level, and one of the largest inland seas. This photo is 100% original, NO EDITS. Only a little cropping for wide format.
