Bald Eagle Hunt
Photographer: Susan Kissel
Location: Kenai Fjord National Park, Alaska
Story:
We were on a Fjord cruise with our family and came across an eagle diving into the bay just after our guide explained that bald eagles cannot open their talons in flight. If they catch a fish they can't pull out of the water, they either sink or swim. This eagle was an example of the swim approach. By the time we got within shooting range the bird was already in the water. We watched the eagle swim back to the rocky shore, jump to the rocks, adjust grip, and fly off to their nest. Here, the eagle is just hopping onto land.
