Redheaded Woodpecker
Photographer: Penny Redfearn
Location: Knightdale, NC
As a novice birdwatcher, I mistakenly thought I knew what a redheaded woodpecker looked like, until this guy showed up about 6 weeks ago at our backyard feeder. I had never seen one before in my life. When I consulted a bird book, I learned the difference between a red-bellied woodpecker and a red-headed woodpecker! To my delight one day, two of these stunningly beautiful birds came to the feeder. Then, the story gets even better! They were a breeding pair and we have watched the parents feed and care for 2 babies now for 3 weeks! The camera was nearby at the "right moment" not once, but twice now, to photograph them through the kitchen window. I feel honored to have been able to see another example of our Creator's magnificent handiwork and to share it with others through photography. (The "sequel" is my second entry.)
