Scarlet Macaw
Photographer: Alex Bundrick
Location: Elmwood Park Zoo, Pennsylvania
Story:
I've always liked this zoo, as it's sort of a well-kept local secret, its name overshadowed by its big brother in Philadelphia. Long-time veterans find no shortage of native and non-native animals housed here, and with each passing year the zoo continues to expand its boundaries. Of the dozens of species housed here is the scarlet macaw - one individual in particular, who never fails to turn his piercing eyes on visitors and greet them with garrulous chatter when they venture close. It doesn't matter how many times I've retread the path by his exhibit - I always make sure to nab a photo of his red plumage and intelligent gaze.
