This hawk was way too big to be entering our tightly knitted hedges to get at the sparrows, and there is a wire fence in the middle of the hedges all around the yard. He did get out, after this staring contest, but without any lunch, this day. His eyes, in this photograph, are so clear and steady and the grass and hedges so soft and blurred. I admire the beauty of the raptors, but love our little birds, as well. C'est la vie.
