This mute swan cob was posturing for the benefit of a Canada Goose (not visible in this photograph) that was too curious about the nesting mute pen.
Photographer: Jenyfra Nelson
Location: Pond in Roxbury, New Jersey
This swan cob postured this way to let a Canada Goose know he was on the swan's territory, and, soon after this photograph, the cob chased down the Goose, and sent him packing to the bigger pond across the street. I've never seen such a huge swan, and this was taken in the 2nd year I studied them, so he was already that much larger, protective and bossier!
