Gray wolf
Photographer: Doug Kaufman
Location: Denali National Park, Alaska
Story:
Denali National Park and Preserve is home to an estimated wolf population of 55, spread over the park's six million acres. On June 27, as we were leaving Denali to head south to Anchorage, one of those wolves, this female, came out to say hello and so long. I have seen wolf tracks in the wild and heard their haunting call in the distance (also in Denali), but this was the first time I have ever seen a wolf in the wild. As she passed our vehicle, she looked directly at us -- wise eyes that revealed a real intelligence. It was a huge thrill!
