Our Work Protecting Wildlife and Habitat

All across America, wild spaces are being squeezed out, leaving wildlife with fewer places to call home. The National Wildlife Federation works to inspire Americans to protect wildlife for our children's future. We protect and defend wildlife and the wild places they need to survive. We work to restore the health of our natural habitats and ecosystems. And we educate and inspire Americans to care for and protect our natural heritage.

Being a Voice for Wildlife

One of the best ways to protect the environment is to make sure our laws and policies make sense for wildlife.

National Wildlife Federation was created 75 years ago based on a vision of Jay Norwood "Ding" Darling, who saw the need to pull together the first national constituency of conservation groups to become a powerful voice in Congress to support policies, advocate for conservation funding and influence lawmaking and policy decisions.

Now, 75 years later, we are still on the front lines, advocating for wildlife with our state affiliates and partners.

Connecting People With Nature

National Wildlife Federation has a long history of helping people fall in love with nature from an early age, and keeping that passion alive their entire life. This connection to nature is one of the reasons we have a conservation movement today. Here are a few ways our supporters love to connect with wildlife!

75 Years of Helping Wildlife

In 2011, National Wildlife celebrated our 75th Anniversary. To reflect on our long history of making a difference for wildlife, we put together the slide show to highlight a few of the many wildlife species that the work of National Wildlife Federation helped directly to protect.

To all of our supporters, past, present and future, thanks for your help. We could do none of this without you!
