My family and I were fortunate to have a robin build a nest on the wreath on our front door! From inside our house, we were able to peer through the top window down into the developing robin family. 4 perfect eggs were laid, and 4 perfect robins hatched! Being able to witness this wonderful life cycle has been an amazing learning experience, not just for me, but for my 3 children as well. We were able to photograph the many stages of development and they will soon hang in our upstairs hallway. As hard as it was not using our front door for a month, it was worth it! |

Recently we have had some snapping turtles migrating through our yard. Females off to lay their eggs, I suppose. The ones I have seen had shells that were about 10 inches across. I watched one digging a hole one day. It was trying to dig a hole on the bank beside a dirt road. But, it couldn't dig too far, because the area was too rocky. So, it turned and continued on up a hill. I had never seen these big turtles before, so seeing them coming right through my yard was a huge thrill. Nature at its truest. |

I love leaving my office in the evenings. Oftentimes, there are baby groundhogs playing in the wooded area around my office. It is fun to see. |

There is a Scarlet Tanger that showed up at my urban condo's deck feeder today. Condo is near Mississippi river but only 2 blocks from major interstate. I saw the tanger first at 8am this morning. He's been hanging around all day. I asked the lady at my local bird specialty shop and she said it is unusual that it has not just passed thru already. The food I have out is a "no mess" mix without any shells/hulls, (sunflower, peanut, millet) so I assume this tanger is hungry and the feeder is too convenient to pass by. Socially, the tanger will out size the sparrows and chickadees, flee from the grackles and dine alongside the cardinals. It is curious about humans and doesn't seem too skiddish when I approach the deck door. Currently, the tanger is resting comfortably and contently in the tree directly across from the feeder, keeping an eye on it I assume. He appears heavier and more plump than when I saw him earlier in the day. |
