For over 20 years, Oregon Green Schools (OGS) has been inspiring and helping students take action to conserve resources in their schools.
Since 2012, OGS has been a co-certification partner with Eco-Schools USA. Currently there are over 300 Eco-Schools in Oregon. With this co-certification partnership, both programs are aligned with similar waste reduction and resource conservation efforts and education, as well as overlapping steps and awards.
OGS’s certification process recognizes school efforts that advance student understanding and ownership of sustainability and the actions they can take to recycle, reduce waste, save energy, and conserve water. This certification provides a framework to establish a long-term resource conservation program that empowers schools and students to take action.
OGS supports school-wide efforts throughout the state by providing more than 20 regional coordinators that guide schools in the certification process focused on waste, water, and watts. These coordinators lead hands-on assessments and projects, support student-led green teams, and provide tools such as curriculum resources, grants, and opportunities to gain recognition. In addition, each year OGS hosts an annual Oregon Green School Summit where students and staff from participating green schools gather for a full day of celebration, learning, and networking.
To ensure a more sustainable future, it is vital that students learn how to take direct action and see how their stewardship can conserve resources and improve communities. By becoming part of the Oregon Green School network, students gain the tools they need to be innovative leaders and inspire lasting change in their school communities and around the world.
Imagine if all Oregon schools were given the tools and support to become leaders and innovators in environmental sustainability. Get involved today! Learn more about becoming a Certified Oregon Green School and the Eco-Schools USA partnership.
