Q. Can I be a part of the Great American Campout if I am not able to camp on June 22nd?

A. Absolutely! We want you to experience your camping adventure whenever it is convenient for you and encourage you to camp throughout the summer. Just be sure to take the pledge this summer so your Campout gets counted towards our goal.

Q. How can I host a public Campout event?

A. When taking the Campout pledge, make sure to indicate that your event is open to the “public”. If you’d like to list your Campout event on our public events page, email or take our Public Campouts survey!

Q. What makes a Campout “public”?

A. An event is categorized as public if you or the host of the event are extending an open invitation for anyone in the local area to join, either by pre-registering or walk-in. The information you provide will be listed publicly to allow visitors of to find and join your Campout. Should you choose not to designate your Campout as public, your previous pledge to camp will not be impacted.

Q. How do I find a public Campout in my area?

A. You can search through our list of events open to the public organized by state here. This list is periodically updated as we collect more information from public events.

Q. Why did the name of the event change?

A. The National Wildlife Federation changed the name to the Great American Campout to encourage people of all ages, all expert levels and geographic regions to get out there and camp all summer long!

Q. How do I put out a campfire?

A. The proper way is to dump water on the ashes, stir the ashes and dump more water to completely put out the fire.

Q. What are some types of camping I can try?

A. Camping in your backyard with a tent, under the stars in a public park, in an RV or car, in a cabin or even “glamping”.
