"Throughout her career, she has been a fierce defender of the Great Lakes."
The National Wildlife Federation is honoring U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow of Michigan with a 2015 National Conservation Achievement Legislative Award, given to members of Congress with a proven legislative track record of environmental responsibility. Stabenow will receive the award on Thursday, May 14, 2015, at NWF’s Conservation Achievement Awards Gala.
“Sen. Debbie Stabenow made a stand for wildlife conservation with her work as a leading author of the 2014 Farm Bill, which contains the most far-reaching enhancements to land and water conservation policy on private lands in decades,” said Collin O’Mara, president and chief executive officer of the National Wildlife Federation. “Sen. Stabenow has also worked to build bipartisan support for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and for protecting the Great Lakes from invasive species.”
The 2014 Farm Bill includes the Regional Conservation Partnership Program, which empowers landowners, conservation groups and local communities to lead the way on conservation projects for water, air and wildlife. It also improves conservation standards for all farmers and ranchers who participate in agricultural support programs, including protecting native grasslands, and vital wetland habitats in the prairie pothole region, the most important waterfowl breeding area on the North American continent.
Sen. Stabenow is currently the Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry. She is also senior member of the Senate Finance, Energy and Budget Committees. Throughout her career, she has been a fierce defender of the Great Lakes and currently serves as Co-Chair of the Senate Great Lakes Task Force. The first legislation she passed as a Senator was a bill to prevent drilling in the Great Lakes.
The National Wildlife Federation Conservation Achievement Awards have been presented annually since 1965. Nominations are received from conservationists and the general public, with winners selected by NWF’s board of directors. Previous honorees have included Jimmy Carter, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Al Gore, Robert Redford, and Stuart Udall.
