"California's leadership with urban wildlife crossings demonstrates that we can help both people and wildlife get where they need to go."
California state agencies today released a new report on a proposed wildlife crossing over the 101 Freeway near Los Angeles, including a proposed crossing design and feasibility and cost details. The National Wildlife Federation and our partner the Santa Monica Mountains Fund have been leading the #SaveLACougars campaign, working to support mountain lion research and to secure public and private funding for the design and construction of the Liberty Canyon wildlife crossing. See the crossing design at SaveLACougars.org.
"This report by Caltrans shows a crossing is not only feasible but affordable and we look forward to working with state officials to make it a reality," said Beth Pratt, California state director for the National Wildlife Federation. "As the recent death of cougar P-32 on Interstate 5 shows, this crossing and others like it are urgently needed, not just for cougars but for the bobcats, deer and foxes that have also had their historic trails cut off by highways."
"California's leadership with urban wildlife crossings demonstrates that we can help both people and wildlife get where they need to go. Much more research needs to be done so we can understand other places where a simple crossing like this can protect wildlife and avoid vehicle collisions," said Collin O’Mara, president and chief executive officer of the National Wildlife Federation. "From cougars to monarch butterflies, we’re seeing a pattern: wildlife species need abundant contiguous habitat to survive and thrive."
Today the National Wildlife Federation also released a video featuring actor Rainn Wilson, star of The Office, urging support for the California cougar crossing through NWF’s text to give campaign. Text "LION" to 25383 and a one-time donation of $10 will be added to your phone bill.
