Washington, DC – Deepwater Wind announced today that its Block Island Wind Farm 13 miles from the mainland of Rhode Island has begun producing power. This is the first offshore wind power project in America, which has now joined the over 14 countries around the world already tapping into this booming global industry. The project’s five turbines can power about 17,000 homes and were constructed with strong environmental protections in place. Over 300 local jobs were created in the process, just a fraction of what’s possible with a robust domestic offshore wind industry.

“This is a proud day for all Americans and a huge milestone toward powering communities with wildlife-friendly clean energy,” said Collin O’Mara, president and CEO of the National Wildlife Federation. “With companies already investing millions of dollars to advance offshore wind projects from sea to shining sea, our nation could soon benefit from tens of thousands of new manufacturing and construction jobs, healthier air, and a lasting legacy of climate protection. Congratulations to the State of Rhode Island and Deepwater Wind for their visionary leadership and success in blazing the trail for American offshore wind power.”
