TRENTON, N.J. –– National Wildlife Federation and New Jersey Audubon celebrate the Board of Public Utilities' unanimous approval of the state’s Offshore Wind Strategic Plan and the second solicitation for offshore wind projects, which will result in up to 2400MW of clean energy. These actions continue New Jersey’s leadership on responsibly developed offshore wind and are important steps toward a thriving, affordable clean energy future where New Jersey enjoys good jobs, better health, and freedom from pollution for all residents. Since day one, Governor Murphy has made offshore wind a center piece of his clean energy agenda. Today’s decisions by the BPU reaffirm New Jersey’s position as a leader on the responsible development of offshore wind, which will provide substantial amounts of clean energy and fight climate change, all while protecting natural resources.
“As communities simultaneously battle the climate crisis and a global pandemic, clean energy can put Americans back to work today and secure a healthy and resilient future for people and wildlife alike,” said Curtis Fisher, Northeast Regional Executive Director for the National Wildlife Federation. “Governor Murphy and the Board of Public Utilities have made huge strides in the push to advance offshore wind energy and achieve our Nation’s emissions reduction goals, all while keeping wildlife protection at the heart of planning and development.”
"We congratulate and thank the Board of Public Utilities and Murphy Administration on the approval of the offshore wind strategic plan and second offshore wind solicitation, which once again affirms our state's commitment to fight climate change while protecting our precious natural resources," said Eric Stiles, President and CEO of NJ Audubon. "By developing requirements that companies must take to protect our environment and wildlife in the strategic plan and solicitation, New Jersey is setting the standard for responsibly developed offshore wind on the Atlantic coast."
