Pacific Northwest Governors Join Pledge for Salmon, Steelhead Recovery

Seattle — The governors of four Northwest states — Idaho, Washington, Oregon and Montana – released a letter today pledging to support the recovery of wild salmon and steelhead stock in their states. The letter pledges collaboration among the states and with Native American tribal stakeholders.

“The four governors process comes at a pivotal moment, for the once-abundant salmon and steelhead runs of the Columbia River Basin are swimming toward oblivion.  Both ecosystems and communities are in peril but decisive action by Governors can restore salmon runs and strengthen local economies,” said Tom France, the National Wildlife Federation’s regional director for the Pacific Northwest.

“Now it’s time to pick up the pace to deliver the bold new thinking and strong leadership Northwest residents need. With the full engagement of the Tribes and members of congress, we are counting on the four governors process to steer our region toward greater prosperity, to right historical wrongs and to recover abundant salmon populations.”
