Secretary Haaland Announces Bold Vision for Offshore Wind

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a critical action for the Biden-Harris administration’s goal to deploy 30 gigawatts of offshore wind energy by 2030, Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland outlined a path forward for future offshore wind leasing during a speech at the American Clean Power’s Offshore WINDPOWER Conference and Exhibition in Boston earlier this week. Through the Secretary’s plans, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management could hold up to seven new offshore lease sales by 2025.

“We applaud President Biden and Secretary Haaland for making it crystal clear that offshore wind energy is an essential climate solution that will reduce pollution and create good-paying careers,” said Collin O’Mara, president and CEO of the National Wildlife Federation. “We look forward to working with the Biden administration to ensure that all offshore wind projects are developed with proper protections for wildlife, while centering environmental justice and investments that benefit local communities. America’s pursuit of this critical climate solution must continue to be guided by robust stakeholder engagement and scientific integrity to maximize the benefits for people and wildlife alike."
