MORE THAN 14,000 PHOTOGRAPHS have graced National Wildlife’s pages since the first issue was published in 1962. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. To find those 14,000, our staff pored through an estimated 2 million images, submitted by thousands of photographers over the past 50 years.

In the slideshow below, we present several of our favorites. Some of them were chosen because of the editorial points they made when they appeared in print; others because they generated tremendous reader responses; and still others simply because they are remarkable photos.
