LIKE KIDS IN A SCHOOLYARD waiting for recess, juvenile emperor penguins stand together near adult guardians while other adults hunt for fish. Learning patience—and cooperation—is essential in the harsh environment of Antarctica’s Snow Hill Island, where photographer Isobel Wayrick captured this scene. Flown in by Russian helicopter, Wayrick trekked across melting ice to reach the penguin colony. “It was dicey,” she says, but worth the risk. “I felt so privileged to be there, to experience this remote and amazing place.”
