Summary

St. James was incorporated in 1999 and is located along the southeast coast of North Carolina – just a few miles from the old fishing village of Southport, NC and about 30 miles south of Wilmington, NC. St. James is in Brunswick County, NC, which is characterized by growing communities nestled in some of the most unique wetlands areas of the United States, and the global home of the Venus Flytrap. Our population is about 6,900 within 8.3 square miles. Roughly 43% of the St. James is permanently protected as nature preserves (over 500 acres), rich with mature Water Oaks, Loblolly Pines, Wax Myrtles, American Holly, Sweet Bay Magnolia, and more. Pileated Woodpecker

The Pileated Woodpecker is a popular resident of St. James due to the rich, natural habitat in the town.

Though our town is about 8.3 square miles, about 42% of the land is permanently protected as nature preserves.

Marshland habitat is protected

St. James contains about 250 ponds as well as creeks, rivers, and large expanses of natural marshlands.

A small coastal community

We are located in Brunswick County near the Cape Fear River, just inland from Oak Island and Southport, NC.

Venus Flytrap

The Venus Flytrap is found only within a 75 mile radius of Wilmington, North Carolina where it grows close to the ground, benefits from controlled burns. Though not protected under the Endangered Species Act, it is a felony to remove them.
