Green Ribbon Schools

The U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools awards program is an exciting opportunity for our Eco-Schools whose states participate.

In order to receive the award, schools must be nominated by the Chief State Schools Officer (CSSO) in their state. We’d encourage you to contact your Chief State Schools Officer and offer to help them in the establishment of criteria and encourage them to nominate Eco-Schools in your state. Here is contact info for your CSSO.

Through the Green Ribbon Schools program, the U.S. Department of Education will recognize schools with high levels of achievement under three pillars:

  1. Having a net zero environmental impact
  2. Improving the health and performance of students and staff
  3. Ensuring the environmental and sustainability literacy of all graduates

The recognition award is part of the Department of Education's effort to identify and disseminate knowledge about practices proven to result in improved student engagement, academic achievement, graduation rates, and workforce preparedness.

We have developed an alignment primer between Eco-Schools USA and the Green Ribbon Schools program. It explains how Eco-Schools USA’s seven step framework and pathways support all three of the Green Ribbon pillars.
