Sustainable Food Pathway Objectives

Learning Objectives

  • Deepen student learning by incorporating a cross-curricular approach to addressing this pathway, including math, the language arts, the social studies, technology, engineering, and the arts.
  • Raise awareness about the importance of health and nutrition, including food education.
  • Investigate issues associated with different food choices - local vs. non-local, organic vs. conventional, whole vs. processed, traditional vs. genetically modified.
  • Investigate links between the foods we eat and how we perform.
  • Develop student understanding around the environmental impacts associated with our food choices, including:
    • human health
    • food miles
    • soil and water needs
    • wildlife and habitats, specifically pollinators and threatened and endangered species
    • climate change
  • Quantify a decrease in food waste and food miles
  • Utilize school gardens and local farms to reduce food miles and reliance on highly processed foods.
  • Create and maintain a compost area to be utilized for Schoolyard Habitat(s) and in studies about decomposition and biochemical cycles
  • Research and develop partnerships with local, regional, and/or state organizations to build relationships and support for your work.
