"He advocated for provisions in the 2014 Farm Bill to protect our nation’s wetlands and prairies as well as the wildlife that depend upon these ecosystems."
The National Wildlife Federation is honoring U.S. Representative Jeff Fortenberry of Nebraska with a 2015 National Conservation Achievement Legislative Award, given to members of Congress with a proven legislative track record of environmental responsibility. Fortenberry will receive the award on Thursday, May 14, 2015, at NWF’s Conservation Achievement Awards Gala.
"Rep. Fortenberry has been a champion for helping both wildlife and the farming and ranching community through his support of sound conservation and land management policy," said Collin O’Mara, president and chief executive officer at the National Wildlife Federation. "The National Wildlife Federation is proud to honor his work for bipartisan wildlife conservation solutions."
During his time on the House Agriculture Committee, Rep. Fortenberry advocated for provisions in the 2014 Farm Bill to protect our nation’s wetlands and prairies as well as the wildlife that depend upon these ecosystems. In 2012, his home state of Nebraska had the highest rate in the nation of grasslands converted to cropland. Thanks to his efforts, federal crop insurance policy will no longer provide an incentive to destroy what is left of Nebraska’s native grasslands. Fortenberry is also a long-time supporter of the State and Tribal Wildlife Grants program, administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The program provides federal grants for states to develop and implement programs that benefit wildlife and their habitats, with a priority on at-risk wildlife.
The National Wildlife Federation Conservation Achievement Awards have been presented annually since 1965. Nominations are received from conservationists and the general public, with winners selected by NWF’s board of directors. Previous honorees have included Jimmy Carter, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Al Gore, Robert Redford, and Stuart Udall.
