Denver, CO – The conference committee that wrote the final National Defense Authorization Act did the right thing by rejecting a proposal that would have undermined wildlife conservation and set a bad precedent by playing politics with our national defense. And today the House followed suit and passed the bill.
Tracy Stone-Manning, the National Wildlife Federation’s associate vice president for public lands, said:
“This week, Congress listened to governors, sportsmen and veterans who called, wrote and flew to Washington to urge members not to allow politics to interfere with the bill that provides for our national defense. We’re relieved the conference committee recognized that sage grouse and other wildlife aren’t national security threats and that the House agreed. We’re confident we’ll have a final defense bill that doesn’t include unrelated provisions targeting specific wildlife species.”
