Denver, CO – With today’s closing of the public comment period on changes to the greater sage-grouse conservation strategy, it’s imperative the Interior Department listen to the overwhelming concerns that weakening the plans will endanger an important wildlife species and a one-of-a-kind landscape.
Tracy Stone-Manning, the National Wildlife Federation’s associate vice president for public lands, said:
“Western governors, sportsmen, landowners and members of the public found common ground three years ago and forged common sense conservation plans for tens of millions of acres of the West. But the Department of Interior has proposed tossing aside reasonable safeguards in the plans that would protect the bird and help avert the need to list it under the Endangered Species Act.
“We call on Interior to rethink its proposed changes, which spell trouble for the bird and our public lands. We call on the agency to listen to the hundreds of thousands of Americans who have consistently asked them to honor the deal.”
