Bipartisan RECLAIM Act Moves Forward

Washington, DC  — The bipartisan RECLAIM Act – which would help spur recovery and growth in rural communities through converting abandoned mine lands into usable land for economic redevelopment, wildlife and outdoor recreation – moved forward in the House Natural Resources Committee. The bill was passed out of committee on a bipartisan basis: it would commit and invest $1 billion over five years in surplus collected from abandoned mine land fund fees to create jobs and accelerate clean up, with local community input.

“Impacted coalfield communities need investments, and the RECLAIM Act will provide the means to clean up abandoned coal mine lands and restore wildlife habitat and bolster local economies,” said Jim Lyon, vice president of conservation policy for the National Wildlife Federation. “Representatives Matt Cartwright and Hal Rogers are providing steady leadership to revitalize communities and restore natural resources.”
