WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Wildlife Federation and the American Association for the Advancement of Science announce the official opening of “Nature’s Witness,” an exhibition of 50 powerful wildlife photographs chosen to inspire conservation. Free and open to the public Monday through Friday, the new exhibit — mounted in the halls and galleries of the American Association for the Advancement of Science at 1200 New York Avenue, N.W. — runs through April 2020.
“For 48 years, National Wildlife® magazine — published by the National Wildlife Federation — has offered an annual wildlife photography competition that attracts more than 22,000 entries from around the world. Now, for the first time, we are exhibiting a selection of 50 of these images to showcase the power of wildlife photography and the role it can play in inspiring conservation,” said Lisa Moore, editorial director and editor-in-chief of National Wildlife magazine. “As the nation’s largest wildlife conservation organization, the National Wildlife Federation is honored to hold this exhibit in the expansive halls and galleries of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, publisher of Science magazine, the world’s preeminent peer-reviewed science journal.”
More than 150 people attended the opening reception on Nov. 20, including staff and supporters of the National Wildlife Federation and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, as well as 15 of the featured photographers, who came from all across the United States.
Within the exhibit, one group of images titled “Nature’s Challenge” highlights some of the threats putting wildlife at risk today, including habitat loss, invasive species, disease and climate change. Another set of photographs titled “Life’s Essentials” explores how people can help species thrive by gardening for wildlife. Kids attending the exhibit — a family-friendly event — can take a complimentary copy of Ranger Rick®, Ranger Rick Jr.™, Ranger Rick Cub™ or one of the National Wildlife Federation’s many other children’s publications.
All the photographers featured in the exhibit have generously donated their individual prints, which are available for purchase with all proceeds going to support the National Wildlife Federation’s conservation mission — a gesture of their devotion to wildlife conservation.
Please reach out to Jessica Ordóñez-Lancet at OrdonezLancetJ@nwf.org for print-sized versions of the photographs on display.
