WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressional leaders should find common ground on establishing a nonpartisan commission to review what led to the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, what happened during the attack, and how we can prevent future attacks on the fabric of the nation’s democracy.

“A functioning democracy and the peaceful transfer of power are foundational to everything we do in support of people and wildlife,” said Collin O’Mara, president and CEO of the National Wildlife Federation. “We cannot truly move forward as a nation from the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol, our elected representatives in Congress and their staff, Capitol police, and our democratic institutions including the peaceful transfer of power, without a full, nonpartisan accounting of what led to it, what transpired during the attack, and how we can prevent it from happening again. We urge Congress to find a path forward on establishing a commission, in the mold of the 9/11 Commission, to ensure we learn from this dark day in U.S. history and prevent it from happening again.”
