WASHINGTON, D.C. — Robust civil rights protections, including the right to marriage recognized in the 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges Supreme Court decision, are foundational to every person’s ability to access and enjoy wildlife and the outdoors. The National Wildlife Federation urged Congress to pass the Respect for Marriage Act to further safeguard marriage rights for the LGBTQ+ community following the Supreme Court’s recent move toward rolling back privacy rights under the U.S. Constitution, on which marriage equality for the community currently relies upon.
“We must ensure that all Americans and their families are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve and to live their lives fully and safely, without discrimination or fear of violence. This is a bedrock condition for communities to thrive, as well as in our work to support wildlife and the environment,” said Collin O’Mara, president and CEO of the National Wildlife Federation. “Congress should affirm and secure the rights of same-sex couples to marriage by swiftly passing the Respect For Marriage Act.”
