Pledge Summary

Lafayette is a city in central Indiana that is located between Chicago, IL and Indianapolis, IN along with Wabash River. We are located next to Purdue University and home to many beautiful parks and community gardens, as well as the home of the Columbian Park Zoo. Mayor Roswarski has committed to saving the monarch butterfly and other pollinators with the signing of the Monarch Pledge. The Columbian Park Zoo is home to the Butterfly Garden Party walk through exhibit, and the zoo looks forward to educating visitors in building more pollinator habitats within the community.

Communications and Convening

  • Engage with city parks and recreation, public works, sustainability, and other relevant staff to identify opportunities to revise and maintain mowing programs and milkweed / native nectar plant planting programs.

Program and Demonstration Gardens

  • Add or maintain native milkweed and nectar producing plants in community gardens.
  • Plant or maintain a monarch and pollinator-friendly demonstration garden at City Hall or another prominent or culturally significant community location.
